131940 website update
23/10/2009
What's new on 131940?
The Department of Transport and Main Roads, on behalf of the Queensland State Government, manages the www.131940.qld.gov.au real-time Traffic and Travel Information (TTI) website. The aims to assist the public to efficiently use the Queensland road network by making informed travel choices.
History of 131940
The 131940 Traffic and Travel Information website was first developed in 2001 to provide traffic information associated with the Gold Coast Indy Carnival. During the carnival, the website provided relevant information on road closures, detours and incidents, allowing road users to easily navigate around the event.
The redeveloped website was launched by the Minister for Main Roads, the Honourable Craig Wallace, on 20 July 2009. The website provides a new look and feel with some improved usability and establishes the platform for future phases to be delivered.
What’s new?
The department is now working on the next phase of the redevelopment of the 131940 TTI website. Phase 1A will include the reporting of closing and reopening of roads (due to wet weather and flooding) directly into a map-based product.
This visual aide will allow quick access to information in real time to the travelling public on roads that are closed due to wet weather and flooding. The map-based product will also allow other incident types to be shown directly on to the map in real time.
This phase is due for completion by late 2009.
In addition to this phase, the department is exploring various avenues to develop relationships with other stakeholders to be able to provide more accurate information to the public from a single platform. These include:
- The Queensland Police Service is currently working with the department investigating the use of the 131940 website as a replacement for QPS’s X-Roads system for the closing and reopening of roads due to wet weather and flooding.
- The department has written to local governments seeking their interest in using the 131940 website for local roads.
- Private road operators have expressed an interest in the website.
- A new traffic web camera program will provide approx 50 new traffic web camera images on the 131940 website in the new year.
